Music for children
Our latest release Dancing in Dreamland is a CD of classical music to inspire and engage babies.
There are two types of music on it - tranquil relaxing tracks to engage babies gently and calm them gradually, perhaps even helping them to sleep, and mathematically formulaic pieces to inspire your children's brains and develop their creative abilities.
Classical music can stimulate the brain, causing it to grow faster (a baby's brain doubles in size during the first year).
Studies have shown that music is processed in that part of the brain which also processes mathematics and language, and that certain types of music can produce significant increases in spatial intelligence (the ability to visualise accurately), by strengthening creative right-brain processes.
The term 'Mozart effect' was coined to describe the results of experiments in the 1990's by Shaw and Rauscher on college students. The results showed that after listening to a Mozart sonata for 10 minutes, their IQs increased by an average of 9 points. But academics now believe that it is the type of music and how it is written that is important, not simply who wrote it.
The kind of music that seems to be most effective at provoking a positive response in the brain is that which fires the motivational regions and neural pathways of the brain. It is thought that upper frequencies especially are beneficial as well as music with a high degree of periodicity (ie wave forms repeated regularly, but not very close together, throughout the piece).
